A total of 100 women in Sta. Cruz, Laguna received free breast examination and Pap smear from GMA Kapuso Foundation in celebration of Women’s Month this March.
According to a report on “24 Oras,” Monday, the beneficiaries included women who earn a living through harvesting sampaguita flowers.
The initiative is in partnership with MQ Diagnostic Center. Aside from the medical checkup, the women also received hygiene kits and grocery packs.
“Wala naman po tayong nakita na parang agad agad grossly or mukhang cancerous,” said Dr. Jamaica Eileen Cachuela-Reyes, a fellow at the Philippine Obstretical and Gynecological Society. “Pero yung mga mukhang may infection, we give antibiotics.”
Among the beneficiaries were Merlyn Santiago and Guarin Santiago, who earn P20 per pitcher of sampaguita.
They were grateful to receive a free checkup, as their income goes to their family’s needs and their children’s allowance.
“Kasi kami walang aral, hanggang elementary lang kami. ‘Yung aming mga anak, pagpursigihan namin makatapos,” Merlyn said.
